The Rotary Club of Stratford
The Rotary Club of Stratford is the youngest of the six Rotary Clubs on Prince Edward Island and one of the youngest clubs in Rotary International District 7820.
On June 18, 2002, our first President Gordon Boothroyd received our Charter from then District Governor Tom Wilkinson at Fox Meadow Golf and Country Club in Stratford. This special day was the result of many informal meetings led by our sponsoring club, the Rotary Club of Charlottetown Royalty in the winter of 2001/2002.
A lot of the background work was completed by Rotarian Gordon Harper and Past District Governor Duncan Conrad who brought together a number of local business people, professionals and residents of the community of Stratford. As a result, 26 men and women showed interest in forming a Rotary Club to meet on Wednesday evenings for dinner and fellowship. In the past few years, a number of people living outside of the Stratford area have joined the Club.
Over the years our fund-raising efforts have grown. Our Annual Mulch Sale has become hugely successful, raising over $15,000 each year. We have several other successful fund-raising efforts including yearly production of a map of Stratford, a Trivia Evening during the Stratford Winter Carnival, a Golf Tournament, a Used Book Sale for Learning and Libraries, the Rotary Run for Mikinduri, the Pay-it Forward 50/50, Puck Toss for Polio Plus and other events through the year.
As our fund-raising efforts have increased we have been able to support a number of projects including: Stratford Youth Can Do, CampGencheff, Upper Room Soup Kitchen, Farmers Helping Farmers, Stratford Scouts, Glen Stewart Greater Grounds, Human Rights and Holocaust Studies Program, Polio Plus, Fuel for Families, and many more. Recently the Club purchased dictionaries for the Grade 3 students at Donagh, Glen Stewart and Francois Buote schools and members were extremely proud to fund a number of banners commemorating World War 1 combatants from the Stratford area.
The Rotary Club of Stratford is a dynamic, informal Club, dedicated to the principle of Service Above Self and, along the way, we have a lot of fun.
We meet on Wednesday evenings from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the community room at Sobeys in Stratford.
When you start with Rotary, good things happen.
